What llms.txt is, honestly
It is a markdown file at your site root that lists your important pages, so an AI assistant reading your site starts with what you would point a customer at rather than whatever it crawls first.
It is a convention, not a standard. It was proposed in 2024, adoption is uneven, and no assistant is obliged to read it. Anyone promising it will transform your AI visibility is overselling. What it does offer: it costs nothing, it takes one upload, and if an assistant does read it, it reads your list rather than its own guess.
Review before you publish. This is generated from your sitemap and ranked by how useful each page looks. It gets most sites right, but it does not know that one page is out of date or internal — only you do.
Common questions
Where exactly does the file go?
The root of your domain, served at /llms.txt — the same place as robots.txt. A subfolder will not be found.
Does this replace robots.txt or my sitemap?
No. robots.txt controls what crawlers may fetch, a sitemap lists everything that exists, and llms.txt suggests what is worth reading. Keep all three.
Nothing came back except my homepage.
That means no sitemap was found at your root or in robots.txt. Publishing a sitemap is the higher-value fix — the readiness checker will confirm it.
